Place furniture before judging room size.
A room’s stated area does not tell you whether it supports your furniture and activities. Sketch the pieces you actually intend to use and the routes around them.
Find the spaces between spaces.
Hallways, entries, landings, and transition areas deserve attention. Some provide privacy and comfort; others may be larger than their purpose requires.
Make storage specific.
List coats, cleaning supplies, luggage, sports gear, linens, and seasonal items. A few well-placed storage decisions can matter more than another loosely defined room.
